My research focus are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) that
regulate transport processes in the kidney. Over the last
years I have mainly studied the cell biological effects of
mutations in the vasopressin V2 receptor gene, and how these
mutations cause the inheritable disorder Nephrogenic Diabetes
Insipidus (NDI). Based on this research, we are now testing
small-molecule compounds that will hopefully provide a cure for NDI
in the future. More recently, I started studying the function and
regulation of the succinate receptor GPR91 in the kidney. This is a
relatively new receptor that is involved in the
kidney-mediated onset of hypertension in diabetes mellitus, but
much of its function in renal (patho)physiology remains to be
established. My aim is to set up my own research group that focuses
on the involvement of GPCRs in renal physiology and its associated
inheritable and acquired pathologies. In this, I believe the
research should have a strong translational aspect so there can be
a close link to clinical applications.
